Sorting and Grading Alpaca Fiber
What is fiber sorting?
A certified sorter compares your fleece against tested fiber samples to determine the diameter of the fiber, and then sorts it into grades ranging from one to six and by staple length and color. A single alpaca’s blanket can yield several grades of fiber.
Sorting has been used in the sheep wool industry for many years. The benefits are being realized by the alpaca industry and sorting is being implemented by independent producers and alpaca fiber cooperatives.
Why sort your fleeces?
Once the fleece has been sorted into grades, those grades can be used to choose the product that best suits the fiber’s fineness, strength, length and crimp.
The benefit of the grading process is that it allows you to utilize more than just the blanket of your fleece to produce quality products. Many breeders who previously discarded neck and britch fiber (#2s) are realizing 60% usable fiber.
Where is sorting done?
Sorting can be done at your facility or at Missouri Skies Alpaca Ranch. Sorting can be done at the same time as shearing, before the fleece is bagged, or at a later time. Sorting can be done at any time during the year. Most producers want the fleece sorted as soon as possible after shearing so they may send it to be processed.
How much does sorting cost?
Missouri Skies Alpacas charges $2.00 per "blanket" or $4.00 per whole fleece, plus mileage to your location, or shipping.
Payment methods will be established when the Sorting Agreement is signed. Options include cash, check, and PayPal.
